If you have a red-tagged furnace, it means the heat exchanger has a crack in it. This crack can allow carbon monoxide to escape into the air you breathe. Any HVAC or utility worker who spots this dangerous situation will shut down the furnace immediately, shut off the gas supply, and notify your utility.
